We have significantly reduced the time it takes to let complainers know whether their complaints are admissible for investigation, and we are continuing to improve on these waiting times. You can find average timescales for each stage of the complaint handling process for all complaints on this page of our website.

Regulated positions: what to expect

The Ethical Standards Commissioner regulates public appointments made to over 100 public bodies in Scotland. This means, when you apply for an appointment regulated by us, you can expect the following:

Code of Practice

The process and practices adopted during an appointment round should comply with the Code of Practice and its associated Statutory Guidance. Find out more about your rights as an applicant in the Code of Practice.

Key dates

As well as a detailed person specification, applicant packs must include key dates, assessment methods, location for assessment, and key contacts regarding the opportunity.

PAA

One of our Public Appointments Advisers (PAA) may be on the panel who assess your written application and/ or the later stages of your assessment. You can find out more about the roles of our PAAs on selection panels here.

Complaint

If you believe your treatment during an appointment round is not in line with the Code of Practice, you can make a complaint to the Ethical Standards Commissioner who can conduct a formal investigation. Your complaint should be directed to the Scottish Government in the first instance, so they have a chance to address your concerns.

For more details on how the Code of Practice expects applicants to be treated, please refer to our applicant's guide to the Code of Practice.
